The Welsh Badminton Union was formed in January 1928 and was one of the founder members of the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation) July 1934along with the other Home Nations, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France.

It then went on to become a member of the European Badminton Union in April 1968. The Union has continually developed and expanded its services over the years and now has over 90 senior clubs and 60 junior clubs with nearly 4000 members throughout the principality.

In 2003 prior to staging the World Disabled Badminton Championships in Cardiff, Welsh Badminton had taken the positive step of developing a plan for athletes with disabilities. This decision sparked a development programme that would ultimately influence the other home nations, and as a result of this there is now a joint 4 nations strategy for the development of disabled athletes and coaches across the UK.

The Welsh Badminton Union has produced Two Olympians (1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games) in Kelly Morgan and Richard Vaughan whom between them have won two Commonwealth Medals and two European Medals for Wales. Both players were ranked British No1 badminton players for a decade.

Badminton Wales has a bright future with many exciting new junior players such as Jamie and Daniel Van Hooijdonk, and Sarah Thomas to name a few.
