Top Danish badminton player Kenneth Jonassen has been named as the new Great Britain and England men's singles badminton coach.

The reigning European champion and former world No2, who will attend this week's All-England Championships in Birmingham as Danish coach, begins the role on 12 July.

The 35-year-old said he hopes to "develop new badminton talent that can compete with the best of China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and Denmark".

RVBA Head Coach Richard Vaughan commented "I think Kenneth is a great appointment. I trained with Kenneth for two years in Copenhagen, the professionalism he will bring to the set up will be a huge bonus to the GB players. It will certainly give them the opportunity to maximise themselves".

The new logo for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games even in 2014 has been revealed by the Commonwealth Games organisers.

The logo, which features red, yellow, blue and green parts of a circle around a letter G, was revealed at the city’s Clyde Auditorium - which will be the host of the games’ weightlifting competition.

The Scottish CG organisers claim the logo is based around the idea of time, data and measurement. It will now be used in promoting the event and attracting sponsorship to help fund the Games in four years time.

The Badminton All England Championships dates back to the 10 March 1898 when Mr Percy Buckley, secretary of the Guildford Badminton Club, organised the first ever Open Badminton Tournament. This tournament was held at the Drill Hall in the centre of Guildford and was a one-day event with only doubles being played.

This first badminton tournament was such a success that the English Badminton Association decided to hold their own event the following year, with the first official Badminton Championships on 4 April 1899 at the London Scottish Drill Hall in Westminster.

The width of the net was only 16 feet and the posts had canes protruding above them to aid judgement whether the shuttle had past over the net. The lines of the courts were chalked out on the morning of the tournament before play commenced.
