The Rebels Badminton club bagged a superb win Wednesday night with an impressive and gutsy performance from all members of the team.
The inspiring Richard Vaughan supported by Andy Mickleborough ploughed through the Penarth’s first pair Ollie Smith and Ed Jones with an impressive 21-6, 21-6 to start the night off. Huw Wilson teamed with Gareth Hughes for the tie and also started off well with an exciting three sets victory over the notable Penarth second pair. To finish off the great start to the match Gareth Day carried by big hitter Simon Rowe took their first match of the night with a spirited three sets victory over Penarth’s third pair winning 21-15 in the third.
In the next stage of the match the Rebels continued to impress taking 2 of the 3 rubbers available, with Huw Wilson and Gareth Hughes taking Penarth 1st pair Ollie and Ed to 3 sets an extremely close contested match where Ollie and Ed managed to scrape the 3rd game 21-19. This set the overall score as 5-1 to the Rebels which meant the Rebels had already claimed the win with 3 rubbers to spare.
Penarth were now playing for pride, but the Rebels had not quite finished. Richard and Andy blasted through their last match in strait sets 21-13, and 21-14. Huw and Gareth also flew through their match with a 21-12, 21-19 victory. Simon and Gareth finished off the night with an excellent victory with Simon’s big hits proving too much for the Penarth 1st pair as they scraped for a three sets win with a tight third game of 22-20.
Final score Rebels 8, Penarth 1.
