After losing in the final of last weeks Canadian Open, Badminton Wales Richard Vaughan was defeated in the Last 16 of Europe’s largest Grand Prix Tournament, the Danish Open Thursday by China’s Chen Yu 21-13, 21-7.

The first set was well contested but the difference was always Chen’s ability to put the shuttle on the floor at the back of the court. In the second set Chen’s domination in attack controlled the game and Vaughan was never able sustain enough pressure in the rallies.

Vaughan said “It was a tough match, it was always difficult to get in the game, I just felt a little off the pace, and could not concentrate, added to that Chen played some really great attacking shots as well as being quick to counter, the only player I have played that I can equate that to would be Gade, or Lin Dan.”

Earlier in the tournament Vaughan had defeated World No40 Koch from Austria and the 15th seed John Moody from New Zealand.

Chen Yu went on to defeat World No12 Persson from Denmark 21-13, 21-14 in the ΒΌ final and will now play Peter Gade from Denmark in what looks like a great Semi final.

Later it was revealed that Vaughan had been informed of his withdrawal of funding only hours prior to that match, not the greatest encouragement!

Vaughan said “It was not the best timing especially as there seemed no imminent reason to inform me today before such an important match, I don’t think I let it affect my game but it does raise questions about the future. It’s especially disappointing given my good results in international competition as demonstrated here reaching the Last 16 of this 5* Tournament. It also puts a disappointing end on what should have been a good tournament result for me which should see my ranking reach 28 in the world”.

On concerns of health “I appreciate the concerns in regards to my previous illness but I am well over that now else I would be unable to compete at this level. I am 2 years younger than Gade and four less than Jonassen, I will be 29 qualifying for Beijing 2008 given that I am a very professional athlete and can more than compete physically with any singles player, I feel I have a great chance of Olympic qualification and challenging for European medals”.

For future thoughts “In the short term I will finish my planned tournaments which will see me make the new Super Series Tournaments in the New Year where my aim is to fulfil the UK criteria. To be able to get to Super Series level in men’s singles and not receive a penny in funding seems to say the least a little harsh, and I can only feel deeply disappointed. It also makes me highly appreciative of the Sports Council for Wales support during my period of illness last year which has enabled me to come back so quick and strong in recent months”.
