Mid Glamorgan Badminton Association stormed ahead to a convincing 14 : 1 win over their closest rivals, Somerset Badminton Association this weekend.

With Somerset on top spot after beating Mid Glam away 9 – 6 (Mid Glam having fielded a part Junior team due to players unable to attend) – it was essential that on the return match the game went Mid Glamorgan’s way.

With a full team including former Olympian Richard Vaughan and Welsh  badminton Internationals Martyn Lewis, Liam Ingram, Vikki Jones, Rachel Thomas and former Estonian International Piret Vaughan the team were very confident in their chances against at the time, tope of the table Somerset. The Mid Glamorgan team set off to great start, winning all the singles matches in straight sets which provided the foundations for a comprehensive victory.

Richard Vaughan commented “It was a great win for the team, Somerset were top of the table before today and they beat us previously, albeit a weakened second/third team due to injuries and illness. Today we had a full team and the result was very comprehensible. Most encouraging over the past few games has been the depth county has to call on; we have a squad of players that ensure we have cover in every area. It was also great to see four Richard Vaughan Badminton Academy supported by memory Lane Cakes players on court today with many other back up county players coming from the group ”.

Mid Glamorgan are now firmly on course to continue their rise through the ranks – with three games remaining they are three points ahead of Somerset on equal games.

Mid Glamorgan fly out to the Channel Islands to play Gurnsey and Jersey on the 25th March with their final match against Devon away in April.
Wins in these matches will confirm Mid Glamorgan’s fourth consecutive division promotion and leave them in the second division of the English County Badminton League.
