Friday the 9th October saw the Richard Vaughan Badminton Academy (RVBA) supported by Memory Lane Cakes players reach the quarter final of the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles, and Mixed Doubles events at the Cypriot Badminton Open being played in Nicosia.
The Ladies singles saw 16 year old Sarah Thomas beat top Russian Junior Nazarchuk 21-12, 19-21, 21-19, then defeat Cyprus No1 Ionnou 21-9, 21-11. In tomorrow’s ¼ Final Sarah is up against fellow Paracuellos Madrid team mate Beatrix Corrales from Spain.
Rachel Thomas won her opening round match against Greek player Ligomenou 19-21, 21-11, 21-14. In the second round she could not overcome the Spanish No1 Carolina Marin losing 13-21 10-21.
In the Mixed doubles top seeds Richard Vaughan and Sarah Thomas overcame local Cypriot opponents in the early stages and face New Zealand 2nd pair Leydon-DavisBarry in the ¼ final.
The Ladies Doubles sees the Thomas sisters looking to build on last week’s ¼ Final at the Bulgarian Badminton Challenger event with a tie against local favourites of Cyprus Knekna and Avraamidou.
The RVBA supported by Memory Lane Cake players are playing the European Badminton event in Cyprus as part of the world ranking qualifying process for the Welsh 2010 Commonwealth Games Team.
