RVBA - Sarah Thomas
Welsh players have a tough draw for the World Badminton Championships

The 17th Yonex Sunrise World Badminton Championships take place from August 10th - 16th in India. The tournament has been running since 1977 when it was held once every 3 years until 1985 when it became a bi-annual event. Starting in 2006 the tournament changed to an annual event (except for Olympic years) in the BWF calendar. This year 3 Welsh players will take the trip to Hyderabad.

Ranked at Number 51 in the world Sarah Thomas, of the RVBA, will play in her 1st Senior World Championship with partner former World No7 Richard Vaughan, head coach at the RVBA. The pair will face 7th seeds Thomas Laybourn & Kamilla Rytter Juhl from Denmark in their 1st match.

In the Ladies Doubles event Sarah Thomas teams up with big sister Rachel Thomas who are ranked 64 in the World to take on 7th seeds, Wen Hsing Cheng & Yu Chin Chien from Chinese Taipei.

RVBA Head Coach Richard Vaughan commented "Its going to be a tough week, but it is the Worlds strongest Badminton event so it was always going to be tough. Hopefully the young girls can gain a lot of experience which can move them in to a good place for the future."

The three RVBA players have recently received support from Accounting Software Direct (www.accountingsoftwaredirect.co.uk ) which has allowed them to play the World’s leading event in the build up to the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
