China Badminton Pro League

China's badminton national coach says a new professional badmitnon league will threaten the national team's success.

The Chinese Badminton Super League, whose season runs May 22-Aug. 9, was established by the national badminton federation this year to better market the sport domestically.

However, coach Li Yongbo said the badminton league's season coincides with a number of international badmitnon tournaments, causing his players to miss crucial warmups for major competitions.

Players will also exhaust themselves flying to and from their club and national badminton commitments, and would have just 10 days to prepare between the season closer and August's World Badminton Championships in Paris, Li was quoted as saying in Thursday's China Daily newspaper.

"The national team players have to sacrifice a lot in order to play" in the league, said Li, who coached the Chinese men to a fourth-straight victory earlier this month in the Thomas Cup, the sports premier event. "I'm really worried about that."

Badminton is popular in China and the state-run sports system has produced a steady stream of champions, including 2008 Olympic men's and women's gold medalists Lin Dan and Zhang Ning.

Badminton China's women currently occupy the top five spots in the world rankings, while Chinese men hold the second and third spots.

Badminton's All England Championships to break $1m barrier

The All England Badminton Championships, badminton's oldest tournament, will break $1 million in prize money over the next three years after being awarded top-tier status in a revamped badminton Super Series.

From next season, the All England will join the Korea Badminton Open, Indonesia Badminton Open, Denmark badminton Open and China badminton Open as one of five events comprising badminton's new Premier Series, effectively the first tennis-style grand slam. There will be seven other second-tier Super Series badminton events and total prize money for the year for the 12 events will rise to $4.7 million.

Adrian Christy, Badminton England's chief executive, told The Daily Telegraph: "Having five focused events, this will be the equivalent of the Majors. It is definitely a step in the right direction and time that the top players were rewarded.

"This new format will see the best players playing the best events. We were fortunate that with the All England - the best tournament in the world - that the best players come to it."

The Super Series badminton format was introduced in 2007 but after a review at the end of last year, the Badminton World Federation decided to introduce a two-tier system from 2011.

Moran Takes WSS Badminton Title Again!

The WSS badminton finals took place on Saturday the 15th May 2010 at Sport Wales National Centre, in Cardiff.

The Richard Vaughan Badminton Academy's (Supported by Memory Lane Cakes) Aimee Moran took the Ladies Singles title convincingly for the second year topping a group of five players in the finals day. Jodie Lane finished with the better game difference to take 2nd place.

In the men’s singles John Davenport took the title defeating Luke Tanner in the final 17/15 15/12.

John Davenport picked up his 2nd title of the day winning the men’s doubles with partner Colin Edwards. They defeated Luke Tanner and Tom Meakin in the final 21/16 21/19.

Welsh Badminton Top Badminton Club Competition

Welsh Badminton are looking to re-introduce the Top badminton Club competition.

The Richard Vaughan Badminton Academy won the previous Welsh Badminton Top Club competition in 2008, and many of these players have now moved up in to the Rebels Badminton Club.

The Welsh Badminton are asking any clubs interested in taking part during the season 2010/11 to express an interest by contacting James Phillips at the Welsh Badminton james.phillips@welshbadminton.net.

RVBA Director Richard Vaughan commented "It is great to see the competition back once again, it was a great badminton initiative a few years ago and its great if everyone supports this. Due to some rule changes the RVBA cant enter the competion however I will encourage all the players to get their clubs to enter the competition. Especially the Rebels Badminton Club for which the RVBA acts as a junior feeder club now. They are fresh off their Cardiff Badminton League success and I am sure they will be looking to take a national badminton title as well."

Welsh University Badminton Championships

The 2010 Welsh Badminton University Cup was held at Swansea University Sports Centre over the weekend of 1st-2nd May.

It was the biggest Welsh Badminton University Cup event yet with teams from the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glamorgan and Swansea all taking part in what amounted to over 21 hours of badminton being played over 2 days!

South Korean Badminton have decided to exclude doubles specialist Lee Yong Dae and include veteran shuttler Lee Hyun Il South Korea even more dangerous in the Thomas Cup Finals.

Korea, who are known to mix and match their shuttlers in team events, could now be the most dangerous team in the event with their latest move in the hope of lifting the title for the first time.

Rebels Win the Cardiff Badminton League

The Rebels Badminton Club has won the Cardiff Badminton League Mixed title with an impressive 8-1 victory over traditionally the leagues strongest team Penarth Badminton Club. Penarth now finish second in the league.

On the night the Rebels Badminton Club started off well with Richard Vaughan and Piret Vaughan winning their first match, followed by Vikki Jones, and Gareth Day, and by the third pairing of Steve Miles and Michelle Smith. That gave the Rebels Badminton Team a comfortable lead at 3-0 which they went on to build on winning the match 8-1.

That win sealed the Mixed Cardiff Badminton League title for the Rebels Badminton Club. The now looks forward to building on this next season.

Londond to Host 2011 World Badminton Championships

London is to stage the 2011 Badminton World Championships as the world's top players continue the countdown to the 2012 Olympic Games.

Badminton England is to stage the championships at Wembley Arena from 8-14 August after being awarded the rights by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The BWF's chief operating officer, Thomas Lund, said: "The BWF is delighted to have on board such an enthusiastic and committed partner in Badminton England to ensure the success of the 2011 World Championships.
