Thomas Selected for Commonwealth Games!

The RVBA’s Sarah Thomas was today confirmed as officially qualified for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. A great achievement for the seventeen year old, adding to her double national title success earlier in the year. This season Sarah has reached the highest rankings of 48 in mixed doubles, 60 in ladies doubles, and 107 in Ladies singles.

Sarah commented “It’s great to be selected for Wales; I have been waiting some time to hear confirmation so now I can concentrate on the hard training that needs to be done to be ready for Delhi. The only negative is that Rachel (Thomas) and I seemed to have missed out in the ladies doubles which is a pity as we must have been awfully close to selection.”

RVBA Head Coach Richard Vaughan "The Commonwealth Games will be a great learning experience for Sarah, and hopefully will give her the experience needed for events later in the year such as the European Junior Championships where she will hopefully be competing for a medal. I am sure India will do a great job with the Games, and as Badminton is a popular sport there it will be a terrific experience for all the team."

With just over 3 months until the start of the 19th Commonwealth Games, all eyes will be fixed on Delhi, who will play host to the Games between 3rd October – 14th October 2010. The 19th Games will be the largest multisport event held in India's capital city. This year’s Games will be the 2nd time the event has been played in Asia, the last being Kuala Lumpa 1998. Welsh Badminton has had success in past games including Gold at the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpa (Kelly Morgan) and Bonze in Manchester 2002 (Richard Vaughan).

Badminton will run throughout the games from 4th-14th October at Delhi’s Siri Fort Sports Complex alongside the Commonwealth Squash event.

Until this week, few in Britain would have heard of Jianhua "Kenny" Huang, the Chinese-born businessman now bidding for Liverpool. But then, few in China or the US knew of the sports entrepreneur before he launched an ambitious $70m (£45m) bid to buy a stake in an NBA team barely 15 months ago.

Chinese media have reported he was born in 1964 in southern Guangdong province and was said to have been an outstanding badminton player in his youth. But he has made headlines by combining his love of sport and knowledge of his homeland with American business experience – honed at the New York Stock Exchange, as the first Chinese graduate employed there.

He graduated from his hometown's Zhongshan University before moving to the US to study at Columbia University and then complete a masters degree at St John's. He reportedly speaks Japanese as well as Mandarin, Cantonese and English.

Unlike previous high-profile foreign bidders for English teams, he is not known as a tycoon. He does not seem to appear on Chinese rich lists and the extent of his personal wealth is unclear. Instead, he has established himself as a deal-maker – this bid is backed by a sovereign wealth fund.

Badminton mourns Anders Nielsen

It is with great sadness that his family announce the passing of Anders Nielsen, aged 43. He fought a courageous but uphill battle since his diagnosis a year ago with esophageal cancer.

Anders was a very talented badminton player, who represented his county Surrey and then England for more than a decade at his chosen sport, badminton.

Anders was one of the top British badminton players when I was in the junior age groups, and he had a great style of badminton, with natural talent, fitness, and hard work. Anders had retired and started his successful business career by the time I reached senior level but I always heard many good things from the older players and coaches. I can remember Tom John a former coach of Anders at the Wimbledon badminton club always reminiscing over Anders training regime, and how hard he worked.

He won the English National singles title twice in 1992 and 1995 and was losing finalist on several occasions. He represented his country 40 times between 1987 and 1996, including the Thomas Cup, the 1994 Commonwealth Games where he won a team gold and men's singles bronze medals, the European Championships winning bronze in men's singles in 1992 and 1994; and represented Great Britain at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. During his career he won many national and international singles titles.

After retiring from professional sport he became a broker in the financial markets in the City specialising in European bonds and bond options.

With his tremendous energy, wit and competitiveness he rapidly rose through the ranks, ultimately managing a broking team at MF Global and then NewEdge Securities. His clients included some of the world’s leading hedge funds.
